The Angelika Vault

Since its inception in 1989, the original Angelika Film Center & Café in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood has become synonymous with the best in arthouse, independent and international film, due to its curated and diverse programming. As a true filmmaker’s jewel and a choice destination for cinephiles, the Angelika has attained, and continues to be, the most successful and recognized arthouse in North America. The Angelika Vault highlights audience favorites, alongside some of our favorite cinematic gems and milestone films from past years at the Angelika New York.

Angelika Directorial Debuts

The Angelika Film Center is committed to supporting new talent by giving new filmmakers the opportunity to showcase their work at our theater. This section includes just a few of the early works from now-celebrated filmmakers that have graced the screens at the Angelika New York.

Global Cinema

International film is an integral part of the Angelika’s curated programming. As Bong Joon Ho said at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards, “Once you overcome the one-inch-tall barrier of foreign language subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films… I think we use only one language: the cinema.”

Documentary

Documentary filmmaking is a pinnacle of cinematic storytelling, focusing on real-world events, people and places. The Angelika continues to shine the light on diverse topics - from music to the environment to social issues and more. Spotlight on Pedro Almodóvar

Academy Award winning filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar was born in a small Spanish town in 1949. In the early 1970s, his interest in cinema blossomed and without the funds to attend film school, he saved his money to buy a camera and began making short films with his friends. His 1980 feature film debut, PEPI, LUCI, BOM AND OTHER GIRLS LIKE MOM became a breakout success, and led to an illustrious career with now over 20 feature films under his belt. Today, Almodóvar is a pinnacle in the cinema industry, with an impeccable repertoire of acclaimed works including PAIN & GLORY, ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER, VOLVER and TALK TO HER. "Cinema has become my life," Almodóvar states. "I don't mean a parallel world, I mean my life itself. I sometimes have the impression that the daily reality is simply there to provide material for my next film."
